The casino and the person of faith, now here is a topic with which I would like to have some meaningful discussions about. I think it could provide for some lively debate and could be very enlightening, as the discussions would allow glimpses into the conservatism or liberality of your and my particular brand of faith. There is nothing that can replace a little bit of controversy in getting the religious emotions stirred up and showing us what exists within us and around us.
Three weeks ago I began a new career at the local casino. I don’t think it’s all that important to our discussions that I explain my role at the casino, but if you think it would add to the discussion I am more than willing to explain my job. I do believe, however, it is more important that everyone understand that I am part of the gaming industry and PROFIT$$ are the name of the game.
My role, although I am not a dealer or slot machine attendant, is just as tied to the bottom line as everyone else. So I will not pretend that it is not, nor will I try to convince anyone that I am somehow separated or morally shielded because of my role. For the sake of your curiousity and to put it simply, I educate people and dispel the myths surrounding the games and casino play and I try to ensure that everyone is enjoying their experience and playing responsibly. (BTW, I really like my job)
Our casino, which is government owned and regulated, is a combination of slot machines and tables games, such as blackjack, baccarat, roulette, and poker. People come to the casino for a variety of reasons, but for the most part it is hope and excitement that is the drawing card for the player. Hope being, the hope for the big score or the big win and the excitement being the adrenalin surge one feels when the bet is put down and the game is on, also the excitement of the crowd, (of which craps is the most interactive game). At the casino where I work the majority of the game play and the profits are generated at the slot machine.
I am sure that everyone has an opinion regarding the casino and I am interested in hearing them, especially from people of faith. For the most part the casino has been regarded by people of faith as an evil force in society and the people of faith have placed a negative stigma on the gaming industry. I have been in that camp and have spoken out against the casino on more than one occasion, however as you can tell I have changed my views on the casino and the gaming industry. I believe that a person of faith (even an evangelical christian) can participate in the games, enjoy the atmosphere, and make an impression on the non-believer at the same time. Mind you as long as they are doing this responsibly.
Can people of faith participate in the casino, maintain their integrity, their faith, and make an impression on the non-believer?
I believe so, but that’s my opinion. I would like to know what you think and/or feel about the casino and the gaming industry.
